An interesting project in ’67 was a bridge demo project at the new Kinzua Dam project. The upland lake area in New York State had 14 bridge structures that needed removal before flooding the valley—some were small single-span, while Quaker Bridge was a multi-span over the Allegheny River for access to the Quaker village, which was eliminated for the Allegheny Park expansion. All the structures had wooden decks, which proved to be difficult to remove without leaving debris that had to be hand-picked, as the area was to be a recreational lake.
The Quaker Bridge deck removal was going slow, so Joe Turzillo (one of the former dirt outfit supervisors) decided to burn the deck off over the weekend. Friday afternoon was spent laying out tires randomly across the bridge and soaking the wood with diesel fuel. This was pre-Earth Day, making this practice of starting fires quite common. So at 5 PM Friday, Joe set his bridge of fire and went home. Upon showing up at the job Monday morning, the crew was greeted by a deck with random holes the size of tires burned through, with the rest of the deck in place. Now the deck had to be removed and carried off by hand, as the compromised deck could no longer handle the weight of a loader!
Maybe the environmental nuts are on to something.
