Construction of this structure was critical to the schedule. Sandwiched between the Peace Bridge Plaza and I-190 and impacting existing ramps, multiple stages of construction were required with extensive temporary and permanent retaining wall work along with several workzone traffic control adjustments. Completion of the new I-190 NB on-ramp from the Plaza was also contingent on the tunnel’s completion as it traverses the top of the tunnel. Along with the consideration of the contract’s Drivers’ First incentive to minimize workzone traffic control impacts on patrons, crews worked through winter to maintain schedule and keep those figures within the proposed ranges.
