Project Overview

New York State Department of Transportation sought the bridge replacement of NY-104 (Ridge Road) over Oak Orchard Creek.  Detour routes included NY Rte 63 through the Village Of Medina, NY, Rte NY 31A and NY Rte 98 to the Village of Albion. This project had a mandatory start to finish time of 140 days. Union Concrete was able to complete this replacement in 124 days and before September 2, 2021 (Labor Day), per the Governor’s Drivers First Initiative.

The replacement design maintained a 36′-0″ clear-roadway width, providing for two 12′-0″ shoulders. The final superstructure was 125-ft single span steel multi-girder bridge. An integral concrete wearing surface was fabricated whereas materials intended to minimize maintenance expenses and maximize longevity were engaged.

 

Project Stats

US-ACOE Nationwide Permit No. 3 and NYSDEC Section 401 Individual Water Quality Certification were obtained to perform the necessary work.
Cooperation with NYSDEC was needed during the timing of the cofferdam implementation.
Oak Orchard Creek is a NYSDEC Class C stream. The stream is protected as best usage for fisheries and non-contact activities.

Anchors Away
Higher than average water levels created adverse conditions for crews. Excessive rainfall, runoff, and discharge required additional cooperation among Union Concrete, Brookfield Power, and the New York State Canal Authority.
Wildlife Included
This project’s design was inclusive of avoiding impact surrounding wetlands and wildlife. As wildlife frequently trafficked beneath the original structure’s westside, a walkable passage bench was created to accommodate them. Union Concrete chose to match treatment on the eastern side, allowing for reduced wildlife trafficway usage.
