Project Overview

This contract entailed a runway extension with installation of a new Instrument Landing System and Approach Lighting System to enhance safety. In addition to the primary runway work, this project included construction of a 510-foot-long, two-lane tunnel under the runway extension in response to the Federal Aviation Administration mandated regulations. While the project was bid on the basis of twelve-month construction term, the substantial completion had to be moved up 3 months when the FAA decided they would require that time for testing and inspection of the airfield’s new electrical components.

Cutting Edge

Union Concrete and Construction Corp. took on the challenge by not only working double shifts, but turning to new and emerging technology to expedite construction. As contract restrictions prevented the contractor from procuring design files from the engineer, 3-D files were recreated in-house from the certified 2-D drawings to vastly accelerate the 100,000 CY of associated earthwork.
