Project Overview

The Project That Launched UCC into Airport Construction

Beginning in 1969, Union Concrete undertook a major expansion and modernization of Jamestown Airport that became a defining project in the company’s early history. The work included expansion of the terminal apron, construction of new taxiways, and massive earthmoving operations across an approximately 100-acre site. UCC excavated roughly 352,000 cubic yards of primarily glacial till, with approximately 280,000 cubic yards used to construct embankment for future runway and taxiway expansion. Challenging conditions, including a high water table, extremely wet soils, long haul distances, and difficult weather, made the project a significant test of UCC’s growing heavy-construction capabilities. At $1.19 million, it became Union Concrete’s first million-dollar project and established the company’s entry into airport construction.

project highlights

Key project highlights preformed.

352,000 CY of Mass Excavation
Excavated approximately 352,000 cubic yards of primarily glacial till across the airport site, overcoming extremely wet material, a high water table, and challenging weather conditions.
Major Runway & Taxiway Earthwork
Placed approximately 280,000 cubic yards of excavated material into embankment for planned runway and taxiway expansion, with haul distances reaching approximately 4,200 feet across the roughly 100-acre project site.
UCC’s First Million-Dollar Project
At $1.19 million, the Jamestown Airport expansion became the first million-dollar project in Union Concrete’s history and marked the company’s entry into airport construction, establishing a line of work that remains a significant part of UCC’s capabilities today.
