Specialty Airfield Concrete Construction

Union Concrete constructed the Remain Overnight (RON) Parking expansion at Buffalo Niagara International Airport, with UCC self-performing the extensive concrete apron construction required for the new commercial aircraft parking area. The work demanded precise placement, finishing, joint construction, and quality control to meet the stringent requirements associated with FAA airfield pavement. Constructed within an active international airport environment, the project combined specialized heavy-duty concrete pavement construction with demanding phasing, access, and operational requirements.

FAA P-501 Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) Airfield Pavement

P-501 is the FAA specification used for Portland cement concrete pavement on airfields. This is materially different from conventional roadway, parking-lot, or building-slab concrete because the pavement must meet stringent requirements for materials, mix design, strength, placement, consolidation, finishing, joint construction, curing, smoothness and quality control to withstand repeated aircraft loading.

Jet Blast Deflector Barrier

Integrated a 14-foot-high, 876.62 LF, curved jet blast deflector into the RON apron expansion, providing protection from jet blast velocities of up to 140 mph while accommodating challenging site geometry adjacent to the active airfield. This barrier wrapped around the entirety of the lot’s perimeter.

FAA P-501 Concrete Apron

Self-performed extensive FAA airfield concrete pavement construction for the new Remain Overnight aircraft parking apron, delivering a heavy-duty pavement system designed to withstand the demanding loads associated with commercial aircraft operations.

Active Airfield Construction

Performed major concrete apron construction within the controlled environment of an active international airport, requiring carefully coordinated access, construction sequencing, security, and operations around ongoing aircraft movements.
